One in five cyber crime victims feel they were specifically targeted by hackers
Here is a sobering thought...1 in 5 victims of cyber crime believe that they were targeted by criminal hackers. Why is that sobering? It means that 4 out of 5 don't believe they were specifically targeted, but were victims none-the-less!
Most people now believe that it is easier than ever to become a victim of cyber crime and the sad reality is, that is the truth. The reason?? Most people won't take the simple steps necessary to avoid becoming victims of cyber hacks and attacks.
"One in five people affected by cyber crime believe that they've been specifically targeted by criminals and many more feel vulnerable to the potential threat of hackers and cyber fraudsters, research has revealed.
According to the survey, which was commissioned by Get Safe Online, the joint public private internet safety initiative, for Get Safe Online Week, 21 per cent of cyber crime victims feel they were specifically targeted by hackers."
You need to protect yourself! Think of it this way; Its easier to pick the low hanging fruit off a tree. If I can just walk up, take a look and pluck off a good looking apple I will. If I have to get a ladder, fight through branches and risk getting hurt, I just won't see the benefit.
All you have to do is make yourself look less attractive to a picker...let them go after the easy targets, not you. Here are 5 super simple steps you can take to greatly increase your online safety.
1) Choose strong passwords.
2) Update software and hardware regularly.
3) Use a VPN when accessing public WIFI.
4) Turn off you Internet connection when it's not in use.
5) Stop using one email address.
